What's In a Face #1: President Bush
This image is a still taken from President Bush's televised address to the nation on the eve of the Iraq war in 2003.
Analysis:
  • His eyebrows are raised and slightly pulled together which suggest fear.

  • The lips are stretched horizontally which is indicative of anger.

  • The brow is wrinkled which could mean extreme concentration, surprise, or discomfort.

  • Bush's posture is also very interesting. The shoulders are drawn up and tense, which may suggest nervousness. The folded hands support this, as they serve to try and draw attention away from the awkwardly psoed shoulders.

T.I. Goes to Jail
What's In a Face #2: T.I
This mug shot was taken after rapper T.I's 2003 arrest for battery on an officer. Expect to see a similar picture as T.I serves yet more time for a recent conviction on weapons charges.
Analysis:
  • The upper eyelids are drooping, which is a sign of mild sadness.


  • Lipds are pursed and closed, conveying definance.


  • Although the eyelids are drooping the eyebrows are raised which may be a sign of faint humility.

  • Head is tilted slightly to the right which may be an intimidation tactic.

Miss California 2009 Vs. Perez Hilton
The video to the right is from the final round of the 2009 Miss America pageant on April 20th. Miss California, Carrie Prejean is asked a question about her opinion on gay marriage by openly gay judge Perez Hilton.
Analysis:
  • As Perez asks the question, the right side of her smile turns downward

  • Her mouth starts out open and then closes, right as Hilton finishes the question, and she begins to respond. An open mouth (although it is subtle as beauty pageants are all about poise) is an indication of surprise.

  • It is interseting to note, that she wasn't truly "happy" as she made her response either (as her exuberant smile seems to suggest), as there is an absence of any skin deformation around the eye ("crow's feet") and muscle movement that orbits the eye.

Here is an image of Ms. Rivers doing what she does best...be photographed while talking.
Analysis:
  • Unable to tell due to extensive plastic surgery.

  • She might actually be crying.

  • Or Smiling.

  • No one knows

Analysis:
  • Carrie Prejean isn't looking at North Carolina. Her face is turned away. She doesn't like North Carolina. She believes that she is going to win, not North Carolina (whatever her name is).


  • North Carolina reflects fear by putting together her eyebrows and slightly raising them. Both have their mouth opened, showing fear and anxiousness, even though Ms Carolina is trying to smile.

Was having dinner at Baker St Pub. Across from me was a table of 5 people (3 men 2 women-Man: on my side; man at the right of him; two women opposite of first; finally 3rd man near corner same side as women) the tapping of his hand, distance, how he was sitting, and bringing up SAT test told said enough.
On leaving, a couple at table-man cell in his hand didn't look too happy the woman was on hers. Plus she didn't appear to thrilled about was being said; holding door for a group, man with a broken hand Took over holding said door, told me who first gal was his girlfriend, and for me to pretty much Back off.
