27 sec to 29 sec is the most interesting segment.

28 her mouth is closed with the lips tight to her teeth, there is a downward pull of the muscle that is mostly canceled out by the attempt to smile. Do you see the wrinkling of the nose there. Disgust. Right now I have it paused on 29 sec. She is saying a vowel, I think. Her right side of her mouth is pulled up, she is looking at the judge out of the corner of her eye, her eyes are hooded with the right eye being almost closed. She is really disgusted. I just played it and she is not saying a vowel, but making a sucking sound. Like a cross between a tsk and kissing sound.

Here is the lie. She says, "I think it is great that in America...."

And then she says, "But in my country...." That is what she really thinks, Her America believes that marriage is between a man and a woman.

That's actually spot on! I did notice that little downward pull which looked for a second like a minute frown of disgust!

It's true she probably doesn't think that it is "great in America" that people can marry whomever they want...

Except they can't...

Nice work Ed!

(New to the site - love this show!)

Great observation, when you pause the video you can even notice that disgusted look in her face, even if it's slight. I have a hard time seeing the wrinkling in the nose though...probably video quality for me.

Looking forward to participating in some of these. Great site. I'm reading a couple of Ekman's books right now too so maybe we can start up some discussion on those at some point in how it relates to the show.

I have read some of Ekman's books too. He comments on the shows on his web site, sometimes contradicting Lightman. For example, Lightman says that naturals are less educated. Ekman said that most naturals were college educated, IIRC.

The nose wrinkle is subtle, but it disappears later in the clip, so I am pretty sure I am reading it correctly. It matters what frame you pause on, too. I wish YouTube had frame advance.

The show talks a lot about micro expressions, but Ekman talks about those and subtle expressions. A subtle expression is indicated by very slight muscular contractions. Micro expressions may be extreme, but fleeting, but subtle expressions can be flashed, too.

Subtle expressions can be just as revealing of hidden emotions as micro expressions.
