Question about a face
May 5 2009, 8:09 PM EDT | Post edited: May 5 2009, 8:09 PM EDT
I wanted to upload this photo but it looks like there is no other way besides a link. Anyhow, I spotted this pic on MSN and it reminded me of something I read in Ekman's book "Emotions Revealed". Does her face (the winner) show surprise due to her mouth being slightly open? I saw the eyebrows pushed together and upward with the wrinkle in the middle that dictates sadness. Obviously she's not sad, but is it surprise/disbelief?

Love the fake smile on the one on the right though...haha

Hey, madDog,

Great pic! I added it to the What's in a face page, and linked the discussion to this thread, I left the description and analysis, blank, if you'd like to fill it in!!

I agree with you on the fake smile. Apparently if the smile was sincere, you could see hints of crow's feet near her eyes, or some deformation, that suggests the entire facial muscle was involved. There is definitely a disconnect between her smile and the rest of her face!

It's hard to tell from the angle of the picture, but there appears to be a slight upturning of the corners of the mouth, indicating a level of contempt for her fellow contestant. The turning away of the head could also be a shield to draw attention away from the expression she knows she is showing. She doesn't want NCarolina to know she despises her. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

be aware that a lot of beautiful models such as this, have cosmetics on there face, be it lifts and whatnots, so not always a good indicator. although you should watch the naso labial folds, around the mouth, the deeper the more apparent the smile is, so its a tricky one 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Also be aware of the fact that beauty pageant models and fake smiles are inseparable. It would not be a surprise in any moment to find a fake smile in any snapshot of a beauty event.

Sadness is interesting, it could be the emotion was what she was waiting to have not expecting to win and the sudden release of not having to worry about losing the pageant anymore releases the feared emotion, which would explain why the surprise happened at the same time. Similar thing happens with tears of joy. Your fear or worry is suddenly suspended and you feel the fear transfer to joy.

in many posts regarding the sincereness of the person's smile, the poster tended to mention crow's feet. the thing is, with regards to the situation, that isn't always the most reliable indicator. the last thing the contestant would want on her face would be crow's feet. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. I thought about this when reading this thread (good one!) so do you think people find smiling the easiest facial expression to fake? I have been thinking about others, anger, disgust, and so on and I always try to smile at everyone but I know that sometimes it is forced but I think in general they can't tell the difference.

What do you all think?

I also think her body language is taking the attention away from miss carolina she has her foot in front and their hands are grasped and her hand is the one in front too

i think she feels good to win and take her out of the picture or it could be botox or something

It would be easier to tell if we saw the whole video but she did just win the beauty. thingy. I think she was excited a little but but i think she had an inflated ego and she wasnt that suprised that she won.

The other face is genuine sadness and a trace of fear feel sorry for her i think shes prettier

she may actually be happy on the right

her facial tissue may of been paralyzed by botox

or this was taken in a split second surprise-smile mixture

and the girl on the left clearly didnt use botox based on her extreme sadness

i liked her better too
